 This old print of Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist was found to have the following, hand written on the back of the frame. View picture “See Besley’s 1920 Directory of Exeter Sept 1959 This engraving is over 200 years old: Engraver is George Virtue, of King James 2nd: The picture was painted for Samuel Pepys: The artist was Sir Godfrey Kneller – painted from the life in 1688. It was bound up in Ralph’s “History of England, which I bought with a lot of books at an auction sale at HALDON HOUSE, DEVON, in 1918. Haldon House was formerly the large residence of the then late Lord Haldon. This present engraving, with Ralph’s “History Etc”, was in Lord Haldon’s library at Haldon House. I had an antiques shop at the time of the auction sale at 51 LONGBROOK STREET, EXETER, DEVON, for three years. Mr Broughton (Snr) sold the books, and after the sale, he spoke to me and praised my bidding. I was a very young man then, and was a bidder against famous booksellers from all England most experienced and elderly men!”
